Ancillary - Magazine Cover

Super 8 Film Magazine Cover
Entertainment Weekly magazine is distributed weekly while being owned by Time Warner. It is a TV and Film based magazine that contains many reviews and summaries of these forms of media.
The masthead itself is the largest piece of text on the page implying its importance because of the use or hierarchy.
There's a film reel/spool on the left side of the magazine which ties in with the main theme of the magazine. This reel also ties in with the dominant image on the page as the main character is using a video camera that is pointing to the audience. This camera is facing the readers and can create a sense or fear or anxiety as alot of people are "camera shy". The name of the film "Super 8" is the name of the film but is also the type of camera used by the character. The text is bold and white which harmonizes with the greyish background as they are technically of the same shade. It is also the 2nd largest piece of text on the page.
The main character is very "smartly dressed" possibly reflecting his social class as he is wearing a white shirt and what looks to be a jumper. The image itself is based on the right hand side to make sure the camera is the most obvious thing on the cover and it seems as if the camera is covering his right eye (from the actors point of view) so that it implies his eyes are like video camera's, recording everything that happens.
The directors named in the coverlines are coloured yellow and therefore stand out compared to the rest of the text.
(There is information about the film on this pdf http://www.super8-movie.com/assets/pdf/SUPER8ProductionNotes.pdf )

Practice Video/Audience Feedback

FeedbackGenerally, the feedback from my target audience was relatively really good. The main positive points that came out were:
  • The video as a whole
  • The effects on the house that was on fire
  • The silhouette effect on the romantic scene
  • The music used throughout the trailer
  • Editing to make it look like as if the "ghost" is appearing and disappearing
However, there were a few common bad points that either I need to change or add into the trailer to make it more professional:
  • The font of the text needs to be different as it becomes more Horror then fantasy
  • I shouldn't give away as much information as I did
  • Should isolate some of the sounds such as a creaking roundabout/swing or the burning house
  • Make it so that, the audience can understand the characters more
My Personal Review

I'm proud of what i was able to produce because i combined animation with some editing effects to influence the genre. The music was one of my favourite parts of the trailer because it not only reflected the romance at the beginning but left the audience feeling eerie nearer the end.
On the other hand, a lot of improvements could be made to make the genre easily noticeable and the plot harder to figure out. The font itself and the colour make it confusing for the audience to understand what genre the film is because red and the style of font it is represents a horror film. Also, i think i should include more diegetic sounds, even if they were subtle it'd be effective. Mainly, when i start filming properly I will have cast people so the characters stay consistent and any scene's were there is zooming needed won't pixelate.

Cross-Media Advertising

Cross media marketing is a form of advertising that uses multiple aspects of the media to advertise a product. The following areas are commonly used as the process for advertising this product or service:
- Radio
- Television
- Mobile
- Magazines
- Online
- Podcasts
This tactic is invaluable to any company as its the building blocks between advertiser and publisher and can therefore increase profits.
My advanced portfolio is an example of Cross-media advertising as I am producing a film poster, teaser trailer and film magazine cover. An example of this that is recent now would be the 7th Harry Potter movie as there are many posters, advertisments (print and online), trailers and news build up that was going on beforehand. Each of the advertisements have some sort of consistency to make sure the audience know what it is advertising:
- Same font used
- Same context
- Typography
- Same sort of Images

New Media Being Used

For this project so far, i have used and plan to use the following software and technology:
  • Blogger
  • Scanning and Printing
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Windows Movie Maker
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • A FinePix S2750HD Camera
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • iMovie
Each of these items were used for different reasons as there were many different parts to completing this project.

The Sony HVR-A1E Camcorder is one of the best quality cameras that I am able to use for this project. The quality of the camcorder will be invaluable to me to produce a high quality video, when used correctly, and enable me to examine my final piece in contrast to existing film trailers.
“Sony's smallest, lightest yet professional HDV camcorder”

For the practice video I made and the focus group presentation I used a FinePix S2750HD. This may not have produced high quality filming but as it is my own camera, it was portable and relatively useful.
“Fujifilm’s new 18x superzoom is ideal for those who are looking for much more flexibility and zoom range than a compact can offer, but who don’t want the expense and bulk of a DSLR system”

For editing the focus group presentation and my practice film trailer, I used Windows Movie Maker because all I needed was the basic editing programs to make these things for research purposes. It was able to add titles/captions, trim shots and add transition effects. As the practice film trailer needed some music to go over the top to create both a romantic and eerie effect I used Videopad Video Editor which is a program I downloaded from a few years ago that lets me change the sound within a video and edit it to what I’d like it to be.

Photoshop is an image editing program that will allow me to create my ancillary products (Magazine Cover and Film Poster). It is of a professional standard and will allow me to examine my final products in contrast to existing products. A useful effect that i'll be using to create a ghostly picture to influence the genre will be a painting effect with nuances shown on this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5P-hwAqlrQ

For when I create the final product I hope to be using iMovie because it is a program that is of a professional standard. It is a simple program made by Apple that allows me to change the videos that i have taken and mould it into a professional-standard one. There is more information about it on this website : http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/

Second Main Analysis - Amelie

Film Trailer (30th Sept)

Amelie is a film about a girl who has had a supressed childhood because of her father and because of this, barely comes into contact with other people thus creating her own fantasy world. At an older age she moves to Paris and in her apartment she finds a box which belonged to the previous owners. She returns the box and vows to devote her life to the people around her.
This film is a cross between fantasy, romance and comedy and it follows certain codes and conventions which can include the following
  • Use of magic
  • Having natural/supernatural phenomena as a theme for the plot
  • Make-believe creatures or exotic fantasy words
  • 'Dream-like' trailers that don't seem to give away the plot
  • Some form of animation
  • As a fantasy, it is generally related to Sci-fi therefore the director makes sure the audience know whats going on otherwise it becomes a horror.
"Although it is common to classify fantasy texts by themes and motifs or by the extent to which story-worlds and events deviate from realistic representations, Tzvetan Todorov concentrates on the response generated by the "fantastic" events in the story. "http://www.filmreference.com/encyclopedia/Criticism-Ideology/Fantasy-Films-THEORY-AND-IDEOLOGY.html
This basically means that the genre of fantasy is mainly defined by the theme's behind it which are shown on screen as realistic representations. So in this film, the fantasy comes from Amelie's emotions being turned into short animations or even the fact that she has created her own miniature world in her head.
Using IMDb as a secondary resource, you can see that the target audience seems to be women, which can be explained simply by the actual name of the movie as its a french girl. However, it is still a very highly rated film and one of the best fantasy films according to this website.

Sound
Throughout the entire film trailer there is a narrative being told, and non-diegetic ambient music over the top which sounds like a childrens lullaby however once the trailer turns to the adult version of Amelie, the sound becomes more stereotypically french. When she finds the mysterious box a sudden loud noise is made which indicates that her whole world is about to be shaken, also everytime there is a passage of time, change in situation or place, there is the same loud noice to indicate it. In the cafe when she "melts" to water, the sound of water splashing is diegetic even though the feeling and sound happens in her own fantasy. The ambient music ties in with the speed of the film trailer because its slow at the beginning and begins to speed up, indicating her worry and the flurry of things she has to handle.

Lighting
In the first few seconds of the trailer the lighting is consistently changing because it is embodying the characters personality so that when it finally comes to Amelie working in the cafe it uses high key/natural lighting as she is shown to be very happy and positive person.
Most of the trailer seems to be in natural lighting because a lot of story is outside.

Editing
The obvious use of editing in this movie, are the corrections used such as a sepia tone to correct the "whiteness" and a softening edit to make the characters look more animated creating a more "perfected image". During Amelie's little dream sequences they use a black and white tone to help the audience tell the difference. The trailer itself starts off slow paced while depicting the main characters from the rest which builds up in speed through the trailer as Amelie's life becomes more complicated. To influence the fantasy genre, during Amelie's "fantasies", they use a lot of editing/animation to show off how she's feeling. For example, when Amelie is in the cafe and she begins to blush, she turns to water. Besides the use of many jump cuts to show a passage of time, there are flashes of lighting when thoughts of great realisation occur and 2-3 of the clips express this also through a sped up version. The pace of the trailer slows down right at the end to imply the ending of the film as the pig turns off the light.

Camerawork
The main type of shot used in this trailer are close-ups as the characters have a load of expressions on their faces, however at the beginning of the trailer where there are many characters being shown, once it gets to the point of Amelie, the camera starts off at a mid shot and zooms into her face because she is the main character.
This is a close-up of the mysterious box that Amelie finds and this is done because this box is the whole reason as to why she goes on her journey to discover what it is and why it exists.

There is a point of view shot where luggage seems to fly past Amelie and this fast paced motion would seem to confuse the audience.

This image is a 3-shot, of the male character and extra and Amelie. In this short scene there is a point where there is an over the shoulder shot where you see the male character look over his shoulder to see what Amelie is doing. Afterwards there is a close-up of Amelies face beginning to blush, however she turns to water and the camera pans downwards as it watchs her melt away.
This is one of the most important shots in the entire film trailer as this is also the promotional still that is used for the films advertisements. This is probably because it is a close-up of the main character and it implies her cheekiness which looks a little animated.
This is a combination of 2 still images. There is a matched cut used to relate the dream reality of Amelie's self to the ripped up drawing on the table that is being reconstructed by what seems to be Amelie's lover.

Mise-en-scene
To tell the audience that Amelie works in a cafe they focus on the costume, setting and props. Amelie is dressed up in a waitresses outfit in the french cafe which has been styled up to look like one. You can tell its a cafe because of the way the tables and chairs are set. Also the lights used in this cafe are typical of being an old fashioned cafe. The character of Amelie also seems to be of the working class as her clothes are neither fancy or tatty. In her dream state, she creates a heroine who is based on the character Zorro and has the exact same clothes as what the audience would expect Zorro to have.

Film Magazine Cover
EMPIRE is a british film magazine that is published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. It is the biggest selling film magazine in Britain. This specific cover is a special one that was designed through a voting poll that was produced by EMPIRE which consisted of 10,000 readers, 150 of hollywood's finest and 50 key film critics and the same layout has been used for the cover for all of the 500 films that were chosen. Amelie came in 196th place.
The most important part of this film cover is the dominant image. It is a promotional still that has been used throughout the advertisement process of this film. It is a close-up image of Amelie that looks animated because of the use of softening as an editing technique, it helps the audience tell that it is a fantasy genre. The spoon used in the image reflects her job of working in a cafe.
Textually, it is a lot hevaier on the left hand side, giving room for the image of Amelie. The masthead, EMPIRE, is in bold, bright red letters which not only makes it stand out but red is known to be the main advertisement colour as its the colour to make consumers actually want to buy things. The style of the font is sans serif, and while doing some research into the actual name of the font on the EMPIRE forums, its stated that "its Relay with a twist". The language used is very direct and looks informal because the magazine cover itself can be seen as an advertisement but its very friendly the way its written. Amelie also has a tagline which is the bottom right corner of the magazine "It''s better to help people then garden gnomes" that is in white which gives a sense of innocence.
There is a barcode in the bottom right corner which is a typical convention of a magazine cover.

Poster
Amelie is a french film based in Paris. Amelie's face in this poster looks almost like the promotional still used in most of the trailers and advertisements. In this poster she is wearing a red/orange jacket which does look a bit like her work clothes however, it doesn't give her any social class because it doesn't look too fancy or dirty therefore making her somewhat relatable to the target audience.
There seems to have been a lot of editing on Amelie herself as her hair is ridiculously black, and against her pale skin creates a contrast thats on both ends of the scale.
The greenish, starry background can relate to her fantasies (and the fantasy genre) as star's are known to be related to dreams and the colour green is known to represent life and nature.
The name of the movie looks arty and is of a serif style thus creating a joyous/happy feeling because the text itself looks happy, which can also be reflected the colour yellow.

Red Riding Hood Film Trailer (28th Sept)

Sound
The usage of sound in this video combines ambient, diegetic and non-diegetic. Up until 0:21 the music is used to create a sense of security and happiness because this flows with whats going in the trailer. It also seems to be a little eerie. However once it has gone past this point the ambient sound chages to a more frightening sound that has alot of base in it and contains growling from the werewolf. Afterwards there is clash between the diegetic dialogue coming from the actors and a sound that creates a sense of fear. The song used throughout the rest of the trailer is by a band called Fever Ray called "The Wolf".

Lighting
There are a couple of times in the trailer that the most intimidating characters of the film who both seem to have a dark secret which is shown by the low key lighting on the one side of their faces but a high key lighting on the other. This not only shows the personality of the character but implies to the audience that he is possibly evil.

This image uses a low key lighting to evoke a mysterious/scary mood as the audience don't know who these people are and their relevance to the film. It also creates the time of nightfall. The contrast between the white horses and the darkness itself shows that they might be the typical "knight in shining armour".

The lighting used in this part of the trailer, created by the fire, creates shadows on the actors faces creating a more passionate mood and possibly mysterious as the audience don't know whats going to happen next or if they are going to kiss.

Most of the trailer uses natural lighting to show that its daytime, nothing serious is happening or the characters are inside a house. In this scene there is a sense of happiness because of the natural lighting as it is showing off every part of the forest.

Editing
The trailer tends to fade out and in quite a lot as its showing a passage of time or change in setting There is also a usage of superimposition during the scene's where the main character and the man she's in love with are together at the beginning of the trailer creating a sense of love and how special it is.

Camerawork
In the first few seconds of the trailer, you mainly see the 2 main characters in close proximity with lots of long shots. A reason for the long shots especially in the first few seconds is to set the scene and to show off the main characters red overcoat/cloak. It then changes to a bird's eye view, establishing shot when the villagers have found a dead body as this tells the audience an important part of the storyline.

This is titled upwards to make the audience feel as if they are looking up to him therefore giving this character power and importance.
The main character tends to have a lot of close-ups on their face, mainly for reaction and to show their inner feelings. This is an important feature for any film trailer because the audience wants to get to know the main character for who they are.

This is an important visual image for the audience because not only does it strike fear and possibly mystery but it reflects the theme of the storyline - werewolf's. This is a close-up of the actual picture.

This is close-up but it is also a 2-shot. There are a couple of these used in the film trailer implying how close the 2 characters are on screen and their relationship.

At this point in the trailer, the audience see's the hunter looking down on everybody in the village from his house, however the camera zooms into the window to show his face as a close-up.

Mise-En-Scene
Straight from the first second of the trailer, the audience knows the main character(Valerie) is Red Riding Hood and the setting of the film (a village near a forest). From Valerie's clothing, the audience can tell that she seems to be of a higher social class than the man she is in love with. The clothing from the rest of the villagers indicates a medieval period, however the character Father Auguste has a more clothing thats from an upper class or even representing a knight or royalty. Another way of telling the time period in this film trailer is the use of setting as their houses are made of wood and their way of producing light is through using fires. Also when the characters are riding through the forest on white horses it implies knighthood and because the horses are white they show purity and trust.

Ancillary Product Analysis 2

Poster (24th Sept)
This Poster for the film Precious is mainly symbolic and can be shown through semiotics. The main image itself is a black shadow of the main character, Precious. The colour of the shadow reflects her ethnicity and it also means being misunderstood which is basically her life in a nutshell. The cracks which sprout from an open hand tear up this shadow that is formed implying cracks in family life and her own. Because the cracks are spreading out from a 'claw' this can imply physical abuse from her family and friends making her life much more miserable linking back to the shadow, meaning misunderstood. The Orange/Brown background has a deeper meaning of craving food, vitality and endurance which can also reflect Precious' lifestyle as she is fat but is able to survive through all the criticisms and horrible lifestyle that she has been put through. However this background looks dusty and dirty so it shows that she is beginning to reach breaking point.
The text used for the awards does have its own style of writing showing off how important it is and possibly spectacular the film is.
The title of the movie is in white and looks a little dirt/broken. The name of the film aswell "Precious" reflects the target audience as its obviously a girls name meaning that the directors were hoping for a female audience. White is a colour of sincerity and pure but because it looks broken, it implies a sad life with a broken heart.

Ancillary Product Analysis

Captain America Film Magazine Cover
(25th Sept)
"Empire is the world's biggest movie magazine, boasting world exclusives on the ..."
Their target audience is leaning towards the men who are affluent ABC1 movie fans, smart, sophisticated, opinion leading consumers who are totally tech savvy and always ahead of the curve.
http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/Brands/Empire/
The most noticeable thing about this magazine is the coluor scheme because it resembles America. Red, blue and white are apart of the countries flag and therefore reflects the film itself as the name of it is "Captain America" who is a superhero.
This has been created very patriotically as there is a lot that show off America. The language used however is very informal and uses a reference to elite persons method to grab the readers attention because they recognise this form. Also this shot is a mid-long shot while he is staring directly at the readers grabbing their attention. However, this image does become the dominant thing on the magazine making it the most important part of the cover as its an advertisement.
The Masthead, is called EMPIRE and is in a bold font, and this implies importance and an extensive group of states/people implying their target audience which seems to be everyone.

Focus Group

For this presentation i used Microsoft Powerpoint to ask the questions to my target audience. Only 15 people arrived to the presentation out of a possible 20.
From this focus group, i have deduced that my target audience would watch a film with a storyline based around crime and supernatural phenomena. I will base it around the genre of Supernatural Drama. The most popular idea that came through in my research was the idea of an arsonist whose life is changed when he meets a strange girl. Also when designing the film trailer, it should be "explosive", as in fast and a lot happening at once, I shouldn't show off everything from the story and most importantly should heavily show the genre of the film and the attributes of the main character. This character should be relatable, good-looking and modernized as this is what my target audience would like to see. I should show alot of physical and emotional conflict between the characters that are shown in the trailer which should only be about a minute long.

Questionnaire Analysis

For the first part of my audience research, I wanted to find out general information about my target audience and what they like and what their general expectations of film trailers were. To produce the graphs I used Microsoft Excel.
I asked the 6 following questions to 30 different people.
1. What is your age range?

2. Out of the following few, what is your favourite genre of film? (Max.2)
This graph shows that the most popular genre of film is Comedy followed by Drama, however there was a limited choice of genre.
Girls, according to this research, prefer to watch Drama's then anything else.
Boys, according to this research, prefer to watch Action/Comedies.

3. What are the attributes of a main character that you like?
This was question was formed to help me decide what kind of characters my film trailer should contain, as the main character is something that attracts the audience to watching the film as they want to know the story behind and what will happen to the character.
The most outstanding qualities that came out of my research was characters who are "Good-looking, Misunderstood yet relatable and Dark but comical".

4. What are the main features of a film trailer that you look for?
This question was designed to help me decide how to edit and create the actual film trailer itself because my target audience might want different things in comparison to other people.
According to my results, my target audience expect a film trailer that is snappy and to the point so that you get flashes of different parts of the story without giving away much of it. If it is of a drama genre then you need a soundtrack that evokes a love/happiness mood and during this period, to show clips that include the life of the main character.

5. If the trailer was of a Drama genre, what are important or stereotypical locations that you expect to see?
I raised this question to find out what settings to use, as this helps with mise-en-scene and would attract my target audience.
The ideal setting would be a picturesque house or area where there are plenty of tall buildings to express a busy city (e.g. New York or Paris)

6. What would be the most suitable time period?
This pie chart shows that my target audience prefer to watch something that is in modern day society as the characters are more relatable.

First Main Analysis - Jane Eyre

Official Trailer
Jane Eyre is about a young girl who had a bleak and loveless childhood. She leaves to become a governess at Thornfield hall and begins to fall in love with the master of the house who has a terrible secret.
This film is in a romantic-drama and therefore follows typical codes and conventions. Steve Neale says that 'genres are instances of repetition and difference' meaning that genre's of film are only defined by the repetitive conventions used by film-producers and the differences between them. The conventions typically used in a romantic-drama include things like:
  • Narrative where there's a typical Boy meets Girl but there's some form of trouble
  • Theme's of love
  • Romantic points usually containing relaxing ambient non-diegetic music
  • High key lighting when things are good, and low key lighting when things go bad. The girl has typical brighter colours then the boy and a massive use of close proximity between the 2 main characters with lots of 2 shots.
The target audience for this film, according to IMDB, is the female population. This can be simply explained by the name of the movie 'Jane Eyre' because this is the name of the main character that is female. A heroine is more likely to attract a female audience then a hero.

The trailer starts off with a non-diegetic thumping sound to grab the audiences attention, because even though this is a horror movie stereotype, it shows a breaking of stereotypes and the beginning of the trailer is meant to be shocking as it shows flashes of the young Jane Eyre experiencing a terrible childhood. While there is narrative over the top which consists of a conversation between what seems to be Jane Eyre and a father figure, there is a fading edit between 2 main scenes - a wide shot/establishing shot of a graveyard/castle, a young version of Jane Eyre running through a darkened hallway. This darkened hallway implies that she is scared and worried about what is going to happen to her. The clothes she is wearing in this scene, however shows the time period of the Victorian era. The narrative then becomes diegetic because Jane is having a conversation between another man talking about hell. She is seen to be in a house that has been critically designed to look like its in the Victorian era E.g. guilded furnature and fireplace. Up until this point, the pace of the trailer is quite fast reflecting the amount of panic and stress that Jane has. The male then says "would you like to fall into this pit and burn forever", which at this point Jane looks to her left towards the fireplace and the camera goes to a point of view shot. The fireplace then blows out some dark smoke which may shock the audience as it comes out of nowhere. It then has a mid shot of Jane banging and screaming against the wall, but we haveno reason why. Focusing on the target audience, this is meant to cause sympathy/empathy for the viewer and these motions are known to be stereotypically related to women.
The next few shots consist of Jane being of a large proximity to the other actors and have alot of low key lighting showing signs of lonliness and despair.
To show a transition of time and feeling, they use a jump cut to Jane waling through the rain while wearing raincoat to protect herself. This is a mid-shot, so even though it may not show her emotion fully, it shows the struggle of her being trying to get through the weather.
The next few scenes are either inside the manor house that Jane is living in or the surrounding area as this is the main part of the story and timeline. The use of candlelights implies this because, this was the type of light source used in this time period. During the night scenes, there is a lot of low key lighting to show not only nightfall but the fear/stress thats related to the actor on screen. The main part of miss-en-scene they use to show the time period are props, costume and location. The Manor house itself contains gilded furniture and candlelights. The costumes used are of a victorian age.
The master of Thornfield house, is constantly shown to have a low key lighting to reflect his apparent dark secret. Also the camera tends to close-up on his face to show off his emotions which tend to be plain.
To show the audience that this film is of a Drama/Romantic genre, once the trailer gets to about half way it begins to contain 2 shots of Jane and the master of the house either being close together in proximity or at a distance from each other to reflect their relationship at the time. Also there seems a bit of mystery in the story and this is reflected by the use of editing whereby the use of flashes between important moments and a thumping sound implies the beating of a heart, and this repetition begins to speed up eventually coming to a close where it shows the credits, date of release and the name of the film.

Poster (23rd Sept)
There is a use of blending in this picture to show off both of the main characters but also to reflect the feelings between them. Jane may be the dominant but inside of her dress is an edited version of Edward that has been blended in with a blue filter. The actual image of Jane standing in her dress is a mid-long shot. Her dress is the colors white and blue symbolizing purity, kindness, calm and serenity which reflects the character of Jane Eyre. The contrast between the dirty grey background and the actual image of her, gives Jane a ghostly figure which also reflects her personality or being a shadow of her former self. This ghostly feeling is also shown through the use of lighting as its mainly focused on her face. The reason behind blending Edward into the dress is to represent control over her, and this image of him is a close-up. It is a very simple picture but has a lot of meaning behind it.
The title of the film is in a white colour reflecting Jane’s personality. Even though the text itself is very simplistic, it is of a sans serif style. The title “Jane Eyre” can also imply the target audience because it’s a heroine that the story focuses on. The name of the actors and other information such as directors and the studios are in black.
The composition of the poster itself implies that Jane is wondering about something and it seems to be a Jane vs. Edward situation as they are both facing different directions.

Summer Work - Music Video/Film Trailer Basic Analysis

Christina Perri - Jar of Hearts

This song tells the story of a girl who has been cheated on and she knows that she has been cheated on, but the male has done this multiple times and therefore the video reflects this in her actions and how it has been visually constructed.
The video, up until the end, is in black and white and this implies the dispel of pleasant feelings and loss of happiness and can lead to the feeling of sorrow which is what the song is about. It starts off with a medium close-up of Christina Perri's face, showing the sadness in her eyes. At this point in time she is wearing a tattered (what seems to be) wedding dress and big boots, showing that she may have been 'left at the alter' but with the inclusion of the big black boots, it implies a part of her is 'hard'. The camera pans down from her face towards her heart multiple times, not only because it ties in with the song, but also because a small effect has been edited in resembly a jar that contains her heart, however at this part, it is non-existent and has been lost to her previous relationship. The camera then zooms out to show her entire body sitting on some stairs outside a house that looks old while dead roses are falling from the sky. This shows her emotion of sadness and possibly sickening as there are dead rose petals falling from the sky. It then does a cutaway shot to a street covered in fog and the audience can see Christina coming out from behind a car. This car is the dominant in this short sequence as it is the thing in focus. Racking the focus after a few seconds however, causes a shift in the dominant, so it changes back to Christina and then the camera begins to pan to the left which at this point it has become a long shot. At this point there is a constant us of insert cuts to girls dancing with Christina's previous boyfriend therefore showing a use of 2 or 3 shots and this is because its telling the story of how 1 man cheated on so many people. There also is jump cuts to where 2 people are kissing (extreme close -up to their lips) , and its like the man is sucking out her heart, relating back to the song title. At the end however, Christina goes to kiss her 'ex' in a 2-shot, where the reverse happens and she takes her heart back from him and causing the colour to come back, showing a sign of relief and possibly happiness. The style this is done in shows that it is of a pop genre because of typical conventions such as a straight-forward themes, its targeted at teenagers and alot of extreme close-ups.

TLC - Waterfalls

The genre of this groups type of music is R'n'B, soul, funk and hip-hop. In this video, its like TLC are narrators who have materialised out of the ocean and are telling the story of young black man who is going bad, a man who is in a terrible relationship with his girlfriend. The beginning gives the feeling that you are flying through the clouds and eventually crash into the ocean, so that its like a point-of-view shot. While on the parts where it shows TLC, it constantly changes from long shots to close-ups of each of the singers (Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who is now deceased) and it does this by fading in and out of each section. In the short stories, the shots tend to be long and establishing to show the money and the amount of people involved in each situation. In the first one, there is an extreme close-up of the drugs he is buying and in the second story there is an extreme close-up of the physical actions between the male and female.

'One Day' film trailer

This is a romantic film and follows many stereotypical codes and conventions for this type of trailer. There are many close-ups of the 2 main characters, showing "sexual tension" and because of their proximity shows the intimacy between the 2 people. The voiceover explains that, the films timeline spans 20 years, therefore there is alot of costume change to keep up with the timeline. This is important as the codes and conventions of this type of genre help to tell the target audience what the basic plot is. It tells the story of 2 friends, who on the anniversary of the day that they met, they meet up every year to 'celebrate' it but become separated for reasons unknown. There tends to me many extended takes in this trailer because it shows the progress of the couple throughout their lives.

'Fright Night' film trailer

Fright Night is a comedy-horror that is centred around the main character trying to kill his next door neighbour who turns out to be a vampire. The trailer starts off quite simply in the setting of the main characters bedroom with, what the audience will guess as his girlfriend who then answers a phone call from his mother. A typical convention of a teaser trailer is not to show off the villain at the beginning of the trailer but to show some of the main characters lives, otherwise known as an establishing shot. There is then a jump cut to show a passage of time, to where there is a shot-reverse-shot of the main character and his apparent best friend having a conversation about missing students. This is also a typical story plot of horror plots. After this, the next few shots focus on the villain, Jerry the vampire (Played by Colin Farrell), who they discover to be the man behind the recent disappearings and killings. The trailer then starts to use a typical edit of fading in and fading out to imply stealth and to add tension. While breaking into Jerry's house there is an insert cut to his iPhone saying "How to pick a lock", so this informs the audience that he is breaking into to do some reconnaissance. However, this begins to mislead the audience as Jerry, comes back home and attacks a woman while the main character is watching behind a door. This is where the tension is meant to set in as there is only an eerie sound being played and no music or speech.
